Frameless vs Framed Shower Doors:
Which Is Right for Your Cape Town Bathroom?

Of all the questions we field at CGAW, “frameless or framed?” comes up almost as often as “how much will it cost?” — which makes sense, because the two are closely linked. Here’s a straight answer, without the sales pitch.
The core difference
A framed shower uses aluminium framing around the edges of the glass panels to hold them in place and provide structural support. A frameless shower uses thick, toughened safety glass (typically 8mm–10mm) with minimal or no metal framing — held in place by discreet hinges, clamps, and channels instead.
Frameless showers: the case for
- Cleaner, more modern look. Frameless glass reads as more spacious and contemporary — particularly in smaller bathrooms where visual clutter makes a room feel tighter.
- Higher resale appeal. Frameless is consistently associated with a more “finished,” higher-spec bathroom in the eyes of buyers and renovators.
- Easier to clean. No metal channels for soap scum and water marks to collect in.
- Fully custom-fit. Because each panel is cut and fitted to your exact bathroom dimensions, frameless suits irregular shapes and walk-in configurations that off-the-shelf framed kits can’t.
Framed showers: the case for
- Lower upfront cost. The aluminium framing adds structural strength using thinner, less expensive glass — typically making framed enclosures the more budget-friendly option.
- Better for awkward or non-standard openings. Framing can bridge slightly uneven walls or floors more forgivingly than frameless glass, which needs precise, true surfaces to sit flush.
- Often quicker to source and install if you’re working with standard sizes rather than a fully bespoke shape.

What about maintenance?
This is where we’re honest with clients: glass is glass. Both framed and frameless shower glass need regular cleaning with mild soapy water to prevent water spotting and limescale buildup — frameless doesn’t “self-clean” simply because it has no frame. What frameless does avoid is the grime and mildew that tends to collect in aluminium framing channels over time, which is a genuine long-term maintenance saving.
Our recommendation
If budget allows and your bathroom layout suits it, frameless is almost always the better long-term choice — both for daily living and resale value. If you’re working to a tighter budget, or your bathroom has an unusual shape that needs the structural forgiveness of a frame, a well-installed framed shower is still a durable, attractive option.
